Case Study - A Social Media Marketing at Point-of-Sale

April 19, 2011, New Hyde Park, NY.

THE CUSTOMER
A New York phenomenon since 1987, Tasti D-Lite has a vision of becoming the world's leading provider of great-tasting, good-for-you products served in a happy environment. Their mission is to make every customer's day better by serving great-tasting products as a celebration of life, health and happiness. Today, Tasti D-Lite serves its creamy delicious, dairy dessert in more than 100 flavors to thousands of devoted customers every day. Tasti D-Lite is now sold through a network of more than 60 independently owned and operated centers, most in the greater New York City area. But soon... Tasti D-Lite will be available everywhere.

THE CHALLENGE
BJ Emerson, Vice President of Technology for Tasti D-Lite wishes to integrate the branding experience with online communities by engaging customers and working with franchisees to expand the brand through social media. The challenge is to effectively utilize a point-of-sales display to post customer feedback from Twitter, Face book, foursquare and other social media, and integrate with the customer loyalty program, to create a competitive advantage in the market place. "Using foursquare, Twitter, Facebook and other online communities, we can expand the Tasti D-Lite brand experience by engaging customers and working with Franchisees."

THE JOURNEY
Mr. Emerson examined several brands of point-of-sale displays offered by reputable companies. Implementation would require, in some cases, changing from the current computer system and, in most cases, making system modifications that were far too costly. In addition, the competitors' displays were simply not cost sensitive.

THE DISCOVERY
pcAmerica, Logic Controls' valued software partner, has provided stellar services to Tasti D-Lite for over three years with excellent point-of-sale hardware, software and support. With over 20-year of experiences in the point-of-sale industry, pcAmerica's solutions are deployed by over 50,000 users worldwide. pcAmerica contacted Tasti-D-Lite to offer Logic Controls' pole display, model LV3000, as a perfect solution for its request. "The Logic Controls LV3000 series pole display is not only the most affordable option, but offers excellent graphics quality in a compact, plug-n-play package that is easy to install with the current computer system from pcAmerica."

THE SOLUTIONS
Selection of the Logic Controls LV3000 model provides a pole display with a small footprint, compact 7" LCD monitor with LED backlight, that is high tech and neat in appearance. This pole display offers 35 degree vertical and 70 degree horizontal adjustable viewing angle. The USB or VGA interface provides quick, easy, plug-n-play installation that operates seamlessly with many other point-of-sale hardware components. "When working with the pcAmerica software that drives the LV3000 from the computer system, the LCD monitor could be configured to display various functions within different segments." The top one third of the LV3000 displays the purchase details, while the bottom two-thirds displays a rotating series of social media screen captures from loyal customers. Each image remained on the display for approximately four seconds before changing.

IMPLEMENTATION
The LV3000 pole display was installed at the Broadway location in Times Square, New York City using an available USB port on the computer system. Installation was accomplished within one hour. There were no difficulties with hardware or software. Several static graphics were locally loaded onto the CPU and the display was fully functional.

RESULT
At the check out counter, Tasti D-Lite customers have a golden opportunity to witness social media comments about the Tasti D-Lite products and shopping experiences on the LV3000 display. Customers can also discover the loyalty rewards program that will earn them points for connecting to the brand via FaceBook, Twitter or Foursquare. To date there has been no down-time or technical issues during everyday operation. The LV3000 pole display connected to pcAmerica's total point-of-sale solution operates flawlessly. This success is in part due to properly designed software that perfectly rotates the graphics on the display. Bill Warshaw, a Tasti D-Lite store manager interviewed on February 14, 2011, would like further implementation of the system. His concept was to use a second display to advertise local promotions. The second display could reside on the same pole, reducing the need to occupy another footprint on the counter. The possibilities to successfully implement any point-of-sale messaging systems are limitless, thanks to the excellent LCD displays offered by Logic Controls, and how well they interface with pcAmerica's total point-of-sale solutions. We could not find any negative comments on this current implementation.
